Ingredients

  • 1 cup basmati rice
  • 1/2 cup lentils
  • 2 tablespoons ghee or oil
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric
  • 4 cups water
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh cilantro for garnish

Instructions

  1. Rinse 1 cup of basmati rice and 1/2 cup lentils under cold water until the water runs clear.
  2. In a pot, heat 2 tablespoons of ghee or oil over medium heat.
  3. Add 1 teaspoon cumin seeds and 1 teaspoon of mustard seeds, sautéing until fragrant.
  4. Stir in 1 teaspoon of turmeric and allow it to cook for about 30 seconds.
  5. Add the rinsed rice and lentils to the pot, mixing well with the spices.
  6. Pour in 4 cups of water and bring to a simmer.
  7. Cover and reduce heat to low, cooking for about 25-30 minutes, or until the rice and lentils are tender.
  8. Season with salt to taste and garnish with fresh cilantro before serving.
